Must Have Art Book For Drawing Animals
As an artist, I have quite a few books that I use as a reference for my work. Many of you have asked me for recommendations of art books to use for drawing better. I have a lot of recommendations.
So, I'll go about it one by one, describing in detail about that particular book, to help you understand better.
Why do we need art books?
You'll be surprised to know how little quality stuff you can actually find on the internet, at least for art. That is where I find art books to be of great help. I like to look at these art books for inspiration and reference, before I begin any art project.
Not to mention, these are insanely good for learning art , very much like drawing lessons. Whether you are an amateur or a professional artist, there is a lot to learn from these art books.
The top art book recommendation on my list has to be Science of Creature Design: Understanding Animal Anatomy by Terryl Whitlatch. I got it as a gift from my friend, and I have to admit, it's one of my most favorite art books.
Here are the reasons why I absolutely love this art book...
One of the reasons why this is the top must have art book for me, is because of the insanely detailed study of anatomy you can find here. If I'm not wrong, the author was a zoologist initially, before becoming a concept artist.
The most comprehensive book
If you are looking for inspiration for drawing animals, or simply want to learn about drawing animals, this is one of the absolute must have art books for you. It is simply amazing. You can learn about the skeletal structures of realistic animals, which is really important to understand the landmarks.
In this book you can learn not only about the skeletal structure of animals but also about the muscle anatomy. Anyone of you who has ever drawn a superhero knows the importance of learning this. Instead of rummaging through the junk available on the internet, Terry's book is a great shortcut for excellent referencing.
There are dinosaurs
- Enough said. Any book that goes over the details of drawing dinosaurs is a must have art book in my mind. She goes into the minutest details, including every single vertebra of dinosaurs.
- In fact, she does the same for every animal in the book.
- Its made by an artist, for artists
- It's not as dry as some of the other anatomy books you can find in the market. There are going to be some in this list as well, but, this is definitely not one of them.
- There is no unnecessary anatomic details, like guts. It has just the right amount of details, to help you draw.
Where to get it
It's available on Amazon, or you can also check on eBay for good deals. It is definitely a must have art book in my opinion. What do you think? Let me know in the comments section of the art tutorials I made about this book. take a look at my other art lessons online.
